    Outline of Role

    Gale, a part of Cengage Learning, has a world-renown programme digitizing primary source collections from major libraries. This role will support these publishing initiatives by researching content at libraries on London and elsewhere according to specific briefs supplied by the Publisher.


    Key Responsibilities


    • Investigate collections for publication as digital archives to support academic research and teaching in specific subject areas. The role will require the Content Researcher to both investigate collections identified by the Publisher and assist the Publisher in identifying additional collections that support the company’s digital archive strategy.


    • Research key details of identified collections, such as:
      • Size of collection (number of volumes, pages or folios)
      • Type or range of types of content (print, manuscript, newsprint, etc)
      • State of conservation / suitability for digitisation
      • Nature of binding and identifying any tight bindings
      • Flatness of pages or folios – any curvature?
      • Available cataloguing
      • Extent of use of the collection over the last 10 years (in discussion with appropriate curator)
      • Languages of content
      • Copyright issues / rights issue (does the BL own the rights?)


    • Complete other similar research tasks related to the scoping of new products


    • Be alert, and make Publisher aware of, any other new product ideas or content which come to light during research or discussions with curators.


    • Create inventories of selected content, recording key details of the collections in a flexible and user-friendly format.


    • Resolve miscellaneous queries using online or physical catalogues


    • Investigate similar content in other local libraries as requested


    • Attend meetings with Publisher to discuss ideas, work, progress and challenges either In London or in the Andover office (as agreed).


    • Attend regular meetings in the Andover office as requested (travel costs from London will be reimbursed)

    Essential Criteria

    Academic Qualifications

    • Educated to degree level or above
    • Fluent written and spoken English


    Work experience/Technical skills

    • Experience in archival research, academic research, or picture research
    • Experience in using online archives of primary sources (manuscripts, printed books or newspapers)
    • Experience of working with librarians, archivists or curators
    • Proficient with standard Microsoft Office software, including Excel
    • Demonstrable passion for history and culture
    • Ability to assess collections from a commercial perspective
    • Meticulous attention to detail and thorough approach to all work

    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
    • Strong organisational skills
    • Ability to work on own initiative
    • Excellent diplomatic, interpersonal and influencing skills
    • Ability to prioritise and make decisions
    • Demonstrable ability to identify problems and resolve them in a constructive way

    Highly Desirable Criteria

    • Reading fluency on one or more non-English languages
