Overview

Job Summary

 

The Head of Strategic Marketing sets marketing strategy and objectives for Cengage’s portfolio of Higher Education products and solutions, including print and digital components and services, to best support the HE and Vocational business in generating new sales opportunities and leads via direct and indirect sales channels. The Head of Strategic Marketing works with his/her team to develop and execute the marketing plans across all product lists. The Head of Strategic Marketing, Learning Solutions works with US counterparts to adapt and implement US Higher Ed initiatives for the UK, European, Middle East and African markets.

 

Reporting Lines

 

The position will report to the Director of Higher Education and will have 4 direct reports – 2 Marketing Managers, a Marketing Executive and a Marketing Assistant.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a solid understanding of learning markets’ dynamics and report to different stakeholders on opportunities and threats, at both list and regional level.

 

  • Work with different stakeholders to translate market intelligence into practical product or market strategies aimed at achieving specific market objectives over the competition.

 

  • Translate the marketing strategy and objectives into a cohesive marketing plan addressing all subject areas, regions, sales channels and related technologies – helping to meet the annual revenue and profitability (defined as ELC, EBITDA less Capex) targets set by the organisation.

 

  • Work with the marketing communications’ team to develop marketing campaigns aimed at increasing sales and awareness for front list titles and technologies, and promotions for different channels including retail, wholesale and direct.

 

  • Work with the marketing communications’ team to create sales tools, including sell through materials, catalogues, power points, and marketing materials for the sales reps at optimum time and within budget guidelines.

 

  • Support Sales in field visits especially targeting the less developed parts of the portfolio as well as key take away targets.

 

  • Review and monitor current market conditions and competitor activity and adjust marketing strategies accordingly and as necessary.

 

  • Liaison with relevant US colleagues and international branches to utilise market and product information effectively and in a timely manner.

 

  • Work with Publishing and other departments regarding future product development and execution of marketing plans – participating in the Validation meetings.

 

  • Working with his/her team, monitor stock of key print products, set pricing of import products (print and digital) to ensure these are competitively priced for EMEA markets.

The candidate will need to demonstrate the following experience, knowledge and skills.

 

Essential Criteria

 

Extensive (at least 5 years’) experience in a Product Management or Marketing role

  • Well versed in understanding marketing strategy and translating into marketing plans.
  • Good financial analysis skills.
  • Good understanding and ability to contribute usefully to product development in all its phases.

 

Solid experience in people management

  • Ability to lead, motivate and inspire performance in their team.
  • Ability to set goals and priorities for the team and break those up into individual goals and objectives.
  • Clear communication style.

 

  • Flexible, calm under pressure, even tempered and open-minded.

 

Interpersonal skills

  • Insight: ability to see and anticipate market patterns and trends.

Academic Qualifications

  •  Undergraduate Degree
